“The Dragon, the Dog, and the Mountain Man” publishes in Here There Be Dragons, the Midwest Writers Guild of Evansville’s 2024 Anthology.

When a dragon moves into the abandoned mine in the mountains around Coric’s secluded cabin, his hunting skills are pitted against the beast’s. As wild game dwindles and winter creeps in, Coric digs in his heels for lean times. But his hunting dog, Star, has other plans.

Here There Be Dragons brings together stories and poems from the guild’s 2024 Theme Contest-dragons-as well as general poems, short stories, and essays by members of the guild.

L.D. Burke’s short story, “The Dragon, the Dog, and the Mountain Man” won first place in the Theme Contest and leads the anthology.

“A Look at Dragon Lore” opens the collection. This introductory essay by L.D. Burke and H.B. Arnette examines dragon tales from around the globe.
